Why You'll Love This Sparky and Persephone Amigurumi Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it blends simple amigurumi construction with whimsical character details that bring each dog to life. I enjoy the shaping used for the elongated nose and expressive eyes β€” it creates a lot of personality with basic stitches. The pattern gives clear round counts so I can relax and stitch without guessing. I hope you enjoy making these two as much as I did designing them; they are fun to customize and display.

Switch Things Up

I love how versatile these two characters are for customization β€” you can change colors to create totally different personalities like a spotted pup or a monochrome gothic friend.

To make a smaller version, use DK or fingering weight yarn with a smaller hook; to make a larger cuddle buddy, choose chunky/bulky yarn and increase your hook size accordingly.

I often add felt accessories like tiny collars, bows, or embroidered name tags to personalize each dog before gifting them.

Experiment with eye sizes and finishes β€” painted eyes give a dramatic look, while safety eyes create a classic amigurumi finish; try different diameters to change expression.

If you want posable limbs, consider inserting thin wire inside the arms and legs before stuffing to allow slight posing.

Change the expression by altering eyebrow placement or stitching a small mouth to make the character look happier or more mischievous.

Try using variegated yarn for the body sections to create subtle texture without sewing on extra spots.

For seasonal gifts, swap accent colors β€” festive reds and greens, pastel shades for spring, or spooky blacks for Halloween versions.

Add tiny crocheted props like a little heart, bone, or scarf to create themed sets for birthdays or holidays.

I like to experiment with embroidery details around the square on the back β€” small contrasting stitches really elevate the handmade look.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Forgetting to use a stitch marker; always place a stitch marker at the start of each round to keep track of your rounds and avoid lost stitch counts. βœ— Not stuffing as you go can create lumps or flattening; stuff gradually during shaping, adding small amounts to maintain smooth curves and proper head/limb shapes. βœ— Skipping the eye placement instructions leads to overlapping or uneven eyes; count holes carefully and adjust placement before permanently attaching eyes or backs. βœ— Pulling yarn too tight on color joins causes distortion; use consistent moderate tension and hide tails inside as you switch colors to keep edges smooth.

Place eyes between rows 27 and 28, leaving 20 holes between them. 1st eye is placed before the 2nd increase. Count 20 holes after the first eye and place the 2nd eye. If you want the sunken eye look, do not place the backs of the eyes on until round 42. The backs of the large eyes will be hard to place. They may overlap. Check this before you place the backs of the eyes. TIP! You may have to adjust the eye placement depending on yarn and hook size you use.

Go back and forth between each eye hole repeating the process from the first eye. Pull slightly on the yarn after going through each hole. Do this about 3 times on each side until you reach the look you want. Use some black eyeshadow to paint around the eye hole. This will give your sparky and Persephone the dark look around the eyes. Place the eye in the hole to make sure you have dusted on enough black. Follow the pictures for help. There is also a youtube video I have for extra help on this process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XoBnTY6k70&t=55s To place the backs of the eyes you will need to remove most of the stuffing to place the washers on the eyes then re stuff it.

β€” Hair Pieces (Make 2) :

Instruction :

With Color C: Chain approximately 172. F/O and leave a long tail for sewing.

β€” Eyes and Painting :

Infos :

For the eyes: 1. Take the eyes and paint them with white acrylic paint. You can sand them before you paint the eyes to make the paint adhere better. You will need to do a couple to four layers of white paint. Do this for both sparky and persephone's eyes. 2. After the white is completely dry, paint a small black dot in the center of the eyes. Make sure the black dot is even on both eyes. 3. Seal the eyes with nail polish sealer.

β€” Assembly :

Head and Body :

Pin the head to the body for extra support. You may need to add more stuffing as you sew. Sew the head to the body.

Ears :

Pin the ears on top of the head. Approximately between rows 36 and 37. Sew the ears onto the head.

Arms :

Pin the arms to the side of the body in a forward facing angle, underneath the neck. Sew the arms onto the body.

Legs :

Turn the body upside down with the nose facing away from you. Pin the legs onto the bottom of the body approximately between rounds 5 and 6. Sew the legs onto the body.

Tail :

Pin the tail onto the back of the body approximately between rounds 11 and 17. Sew the tail onto the body.

Back :

Pin the square onto the back of the body. Sew the square onto the back. Pin the spots onto the square and sew them on. Add some black stitches with embroidery thread around the edges of the square.

Stitches and Face :

Embroider stitches on different parts of the arms, legs and body, random spots to give the frankenweenie effect. Embroider some eyebrows with a strand of black yarn, not embroidery thread.

Assembly Instructions

  • Pin the head to the body for extra support; add more stuffing as needed and sew the head securely to the body.
  • Pin ears on top of the head approximately between rows 36 and 37, check symmetry, and sew the ears onto the head.
  • Pin arms to the sides of the body facing forward under the neck and sew them into place; if using safety eyes as bolts, place the arms underneath the bolts before sewing.
  • Turn the body upside down and pin legs to the bottom approximately between rounds 5 and 6, then sew the legs securely.
  • Pin the tail onto the back of the body approximately between rounds 11 and 17, and sew it in place.
  • Pin the square onto the back, sew it in place, then pin and sew the spots and add embroidered black stitches around the square edges for detail.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘Do not join rounds unless stated; work in a continuous spiral unless instructed otherwise.
  • πŸ’‘Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round to maintain correct round counts.
  • πŸ’‘All stitches are worked in both loops unless otherwise stated in the pattern.
  • πŸ’‘Stuff gradually while shaping; overstuffing can distort the form and under stuffing can collapse shapes.
  • πŸ’‘Test eye placement before securing backs; large eyes may overlap and require adjustments.
