Techniques used include working in rounds, front/back loop work and simple embroidery for details. Photos and assembly notes help you position pieces accurately and finish with a professional look.

Why You'll Love This Plumbers and Pipes Amigurumi Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it brings two classic characters to life in a small, charming scale that is quick to make. I enjoy the balance between simple amigurumi shapes and tiny details like the moustache and cap insignia. The pipe and mushroom accessories add character and make the finished set feel like a scene. Working this pattern taught me fun ways to use BLO/FLO for shaping and I hope you enjoy those techniques as much as I do.

Switch Things Up

I love how versatile this pattern is for customization; you can switch colors to make different characters or seasonal versions.

Try using pastel yarns for a softer, nursery-friendly look, or bold brights for a toy-like display piece.

Want it bigger or smaller? Change your yarn weight and hook size β€” bulky yarn with a larger hook will make chunky plumbers, while fingering weight creates minis.

I often swap safety eyes for embroidered eyes to make toys safer for young children; you can also use glass or larger novelty eyes for display pieces.

Experiment with facial expressions by adjusting eyebrow placement and moustache shape; little changes give big personality shifts.

For a poseable figure, add thin wire inside the arms or legs for movement, but hide ends carefully and avoid if making for kids.

Add tiny accessories like a crochet wrench, coin or mushroom to create a scene β€” I sometimes make a tiny flag or scarf for seasonal flair.

Try different yarn textures like cotton for crisp stitches or acrylic for extra softness and durability; the pipe looks great in textured yarn too.

Mix and match button styles and embroidery for cap logos β€” felt or sewn appliques are a quick way to customize.

I also like making a whole family of plumbers by varying colors and adding small details like freckles, glasses or patches on overalls for storytelling versions.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Skipping stitch markers during rounds causes you to lose track of the start and miscount increases; place a marker at the first stitch of each round and move it as you complete rounds. βœ— Forgetting to change colors exactly where instructed creates visible color joins; change yarns at the exact stitch indicated and weave in ends neatly or seal tails as shown. βœ— Overstuffing small pieces makes details bulge and distort the shape; stuff gradually with small amounts and check shape frequently before finishing. βœ— Not working the BLO/FLO instructions correctly will change the intended texture of the piece; practice front/back loop-only stitches on a swatch and follow the instruction exactly. βœ— Rushing decreases and increases can change stitch counts and ruin symmetry; count each round after increases/decreases and correct mistakes before continuing.

β€” Sealing Method :

Info :

I often use this method to get rid of some tails because it saves more time than weaving the tails in one by one. However, make sure the area that you want to "seal" is not visible, thus, not making it ugly. 1. Hold the tail to your piece. If you have more than 1 tail, you can twist it to become one. 2. Apply a small amount of hot glue gun, quickly and carefully press it using a metal flat object, I'm using my scissors. 3. Cut off the tail and you're done.

β€” Assembly :

Info :

I recommend to use ball point pins for assembly. This way will help you to keep the pieces in place and make it easier to do the sewing. I'm using a hot glue gun to attach some of the parts, but if you make this amigurumi for kids, I recommend to make it fully sewn.

Step 1 :

1. Sew the body to the head.

Step 2 :

2. Sew the hair base to the head diagonally like so:

Step 3 :

3. Sew the left and right collar outlining the beige area on the body like so:

Step 4 :

4. Attach the uniform to the body. Make sure the front and back "flaps" are in the centre.

Step 5 :

5. Sew the legs to the lower part of the body, approximately on R4-R7 of the uniform, and about 4sts in between.

Step 6 :

6. This step is optional, I inserted a wire through the upper part of the body for the arms. (Not recommended if you make this amigurumi for kids)

Step 7 :

7. Sew the arms to the sides of the upper body.

Step 8 :

8. Attach the pocket to the centre of the uniform.

Step 9 :

9. Attach both straps from the front flap, to the shoulders then to the back flap.

Step 10 :

10. Attach the buttons on the left and right side of the front flap, in front of the straps.

Step 11 :

11. Sew the ears to the sides of the face, approximately 5sts away from the eyes, and in the same level of the eyes.

Step 12 :

12. Place the moustache slightly under the eyes. Don't attach it yet. (more on the next page)

Step 13 :

13. Sew the nose in the space between the eyes, in front of the moustache. Then, sew/glue only the upper part of the moustache (leave the lower part hanging).

Step 14 :

14. Attach the eyebrows above the eyes like so.

Step 15 :

15. Attach the sideburns in front of the ears and slightly upper.

Step 16 :

16. Using light blue yarn, embroider a line surrounding the outside half of both eyes like so. Then apply peach/pink eyeshadow/real blush for the cheeks (optional).

Step 17 :

17. Insert the cap to the head.

β€” Mushroom Assembly :

Assembly :

1) Insert the body to the head, place the head diagonally like so, then sew them in place using the head's tail. 2) Attach one dot on the top of the head. 3) Attach 2 dots on the front and back side of the head. 4) Attach 2 dots on the left and right side of the head. 5) (Optional) Apply light blush on the cheeks. 6) Make the other colour!

Assembly Instructions

  • Sew the body to the head, aligning the neck area and securing with a ladder stitch for a neat join.
  • Sew the hair base to the head diagonally to create the hairline, then secure the cap over the hair base.
  • Sew the left and right collar outlining the beige area on the body, securing with small whipstitches.
  • Sew the legs to the lower part of the body around R4-R7 of the uniform, spacing them about 4 stitches apart for balance.
  • Attach the pocket to the centre of the uniform, then attach both straps from the front flap to the shoulders and back flap.
  • Sew facial features: place the moustache under the nose and attach only the upper edge so the lower part hangs; attach eyebrows and sideburns as shown.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘Use stitch markers to keep track of your rounds and the start stitch, especially during increases and decreases.
  • πŸ’‘Stuff firmly but not too tightly to preserve shape; overstuffing can distort small details like the nose and cap.
  • πŸ’‘Pin all parts in place before sewing to ensure symmetry and proper placement; pictures are useful guides.
  • πŸ’‘If making for children, prefer sewing parts securely rather than using hot glue for safety.
  • πŸ’‘Work with consistent tension throughout to achieve even stitches and smooth shaping.
