About This Down on the Farm - Stack Toy Amigurumi Pattern

This pattern creates a delightful stack toy of farm animals that sit on a hay-covered cone base. Youll work individual body rings and heads for horse, cow, pig and rooster plus accessories like ears, tails and mane. Techniques used are basic amigurumi stitches with some working in back loops, simple color changes and fringe for the hay.

Detailed round-by-round instructions are provided for each piece, including cone cover, outer body covers, and assembly notes. Photographs show placement and finishing touches to help you assemble the stack neatly.

Why You'll Love This Down on the Farm - Stack Toy Amigurumi Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it turns everyday yarn into a playful farm scene that stacks together like a toy tower. I enjoy the variety β€” each animal has its own personality and small finishing details like manes, patches and hay that make the set special. The stitches are familiar and approachable, so I can relax while crocheting and still get satisfying shaping results. Its also a great gift project; I get joy imagining kids stacking and rearranging the animals after I finish.

Switch Things Up

I love customizing the colors when I make this stack; try pastel shades for a softer, nursery-friendly look or bold primaries for a playful kid version.

I sometimes change yarn weight and hook to create a mini keychain stack by using sport weight yarn and a smaller hook β€” perfect for gift tags.

Want a chunkier, cuddlier set? Use bulky yarn and a larger hook to make a plush version that feels extra snuggly.

I often embroider different facial expressions to give each animal its own personality β€” a slight change in eye placement can make a big difference.

Try adding tiny accessories like a felt flower, mini scarf or a ribbon around the neck to personalize each animal for the recipient.

For a realistic mane or tail, mix two shades of brown held together for depth; trimming and layering gives a natural look.

If you prefer safety eyes, use them for children over the recommended age, but I sometimes stitch eyes for baby-safe toys.

Rearrange the stacking order to create different silhouettes β€” a rooster on top, pig in the middle, or a single large animal on the cone looks great too.

I like to experiment with the hay length and density β€” shorter strands look tidy while long thick fringe creates a wild hay effect.

Don’t be afraid to mix brands or substitute colors from your stash; just swatch a small ring to check fit on the cone and adjust the number of rounds if needed.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Skipping stitch markers during long rounds makes it hard to track your beginning of round; place a marker at the start of each round and move it as you work. βœ— Not stuffing gradually causes lumps and awkward shaping; stuff in small amounts while shaping so the piece remains smooth and even. βœ— Fastening off too early or leaving tails too short prevents secure sewing; leave long tails for assembly and weave them in after sewing pieces together. βœ— Working with inconsistent tension changes final size and fit around the cone; try to keep even tension and check gauge by making a small sample ring before starting the cone base. βœ— Attaching parts without pinning can lead to uneven placement; pin or baste pieces in position and check photos before final sewing.

β€” Assemble Cone Base and Cover :

Info :

* Note: I prefer to leave the packaging plastic cover on my styrofoam cone. I remove the label, but I feel the cone is less likely to break when the plastic is left on. It also makes it easier to slip the cone cover onto the cone. But this is my preference, but do whichever works best for you.

Round 37 :

Slip Outer Cone Cover onto Cone. Holding right side of Cone Base on bottom of Cone, and with the top of Cone towards you, join pieces by working through sts of Rnd 36 of Outer Cone Cover and last Rnd of Base. Work (sc in next 6 sts, work 2 sc in next st) Rep ( ) around. (48 sc) Join with sl st in first st.

Hay Strands: Cut several strands of Bright Yellow 6-1/2" long. (Hint: I wrap my yarn around a pack of Post-It Notes for the ideal length) Beg with outer rnd of strands, knot 1 strand of yarn in each fr lp of sts of Rnd 43. Knot 1 strand of yarn in each rem lp of sts of Rnds 37 - 42. Strands shouldn’t need to be trimmed but that’s up to you if you choose to do so.

Info :

Note: When working the Body Rings, the length of the ring should be long enough for the stuffed ring to go around the cone and have the ends meet without stretching the piece too much. If you need to work a couple of extra rnds or a couple less than what the instructions state, that’s perfectly fine.

Assembly Instructions

  • Slip Outer Cone Cover onto the Styrofoam cone, align the Cone Base and join by working through the sts of round 36 of the outer cover and the last round of the base, then fasten and continue shaping the cone as instructed.
  • Knot and attach hay strands to the fringe rounds around the cone (Rnd 37-43 area) by knotting individual bright yellow strands in the front loops and remaining loops of the rounds to create the hay skirt.
  • Stuff head and body rings leaving a center cavity, insert the inner body into the outer body ring, then sc around through both layers to close and ensure inner body will slip onto the cone top.
  • Sew necks to body rings so that necks angle upwards as directed in each animal section, then attach heads to the neck tops positioning the beginning chain horizontally where specified.
  • Position legs evenly around the body ring (pattern photos show placement); sew legs securely to the body ring and add tails, manes, wings and other features before final assembly onto the cone.
  • Stack completed animals and pieces on the cone: place larger stuffed rings like horse or cow on the cone base first, then smaller items like pig and rooster, arranging hay and tails to match photos for stability.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘Use stitch markers to keep track of round beginnings when working many continuous rounds to avoid losing your place.
  • πŸ’‘Stuff pieces gradually while shaping so you achieve smooth forms and avoid lumps in heads, necks and rings.
  • πŸ’‘Leave long tails for sewing to make assembly easier and ensure secure attachments between parts.
  • πŸ’‘When adding hay or fringe, knot strands consistently and trim only after attaching several rows to get an even look.
