About This Animal Kingdom Blanket Pattern

This pack contains all the instructions to create the Animal Kingdom Blanketindividual animal appliquE9 squares plus the join and border details. Each square is made separately and sewn together using a continuous flat braid join before adding the outer border. The patterns use Stylecraft Special DK shades and are written in US terminology for clarity.

Animal Kingdom Blanket Pattern crochet pattern - detailed view of completed project

The original blanket is made up of 30 squares measuring approximately 14.5cm x 14.5cm, making a finished blanket around 84cm x 100cm. You can mix and match colours to create your own unique layout.

Why You'll Love This Animal Kingdom Blanket Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it brings a collection of charming animal faces into a single, cohesive blanket design that feels playful and warm. I enjoyed designing each appliquE9 so they have character while still being quick to make. The patterns let me be creative with colour and placement, and I find the continuous flat braid join gives such a neat, handcrafted finish. Its deeply satisfying to see lots of little pieces come together into a cozy, finished blanket.

Switch Things Up

I love how easy it is to customise this blanket by changing colours try bright, modern shades for a contemporary look or soft pastels for a baby blanket.

To make the blanket larger or smaller simply alter the number of squares; adding rows will widen and lengthen the finished piece.

I often substitute yarns to create different textures a slightly thicker DK or light aran will make a chunkier, cosier blanket.

Try making a set of the same animal in different colours for a themed strip in the blanket this creates a striking visual effect.

Experiment with the join: the continuous flat braid is neat, but a slip-stitch or whipstitch join gives a softer seam if you prefer a less defined edge.

I sometimes add small crocheted accessories (hats, scarves) to a few appliquE9s to personalise gifts and make a collection more playful.

For a polished finish, block squares gently before joining this helps even out differing stitch tensions and produces a more uniform blanket.

Try embroidery details instead of small appliquE9s for very tiny features to speed up finishing while keeping character.

If you want a toddler-sized blanket, reduce the square count and add a wider border for durability it's a practical way to adapt size.

I like to mix neutral background squares with colourful appliquE9s to let the animals pop; play with contrast to discover your favourite layout.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Skipping the recommended hook size will change the finished square dimensions and the join; use a 3.5mm hook as suggested and swatch first to check gauge. βœ— Forgetting to leave long tails when fastening off makes sewing pieces on and joining harder; leave a long enough tail for sewing each appliquE9 securely in place. βœ— Not checking your stitch counts after rounds will cause shaping issues later; count your stitches after every round and especially after increases and decreases. βœ— Sewing appliquE9s without pinning or positioning first can result in uneven placement; pin and check placement against the photo before sewing to get consistent results. βœ— Overstuffing or under-stretching squares will produce an uneven blanket surface; block or gently steam squares if needed and join when squares are relaxed for a more uniform finish.

Assembly Instructions

  • Each square is made individually, before joining together with a continuous flat braid join, before adding the border.
  • Make and arrange your squares into the desired layout (original uses 30 squares, approximately 14.5cm x 14.5cm each) then join them using the continuous flat braid join for a neat finish.
  • Sew all appliquE9 pieces onto their squares before joining the squares together so the seams are hidden on the reverse.
  • Add the border after joining all squares: use Parchment shade (approximately 1.5 balls for join and border) and work the border rounds evenly around the joined blanket.
  • Block or gently steam individual squares if necessary to even out shape before joining to ensure a uniform finished blanket.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘Use a 3.5mm crochet hook for the main work as stated in pattern notes to achieve the correct finished square size.
  • πŸ’‘Leave long tails when fastening off appliquE9 pieces so you have enough yarn to sew them securely onto the squares.
  • πŸ’‘This pattern uses US terminology throughout; check abbreviations listed at the start of each appliquE9 before you begin.

FAQs

What size will the finished piece be?

The original Animal Kingdom Blanket measures approximately 84cm x 100cm when made with 30 squares (each square approx 14.5cm x 14.5cm) using the recommended yarn and 3.5mm hook.

Can I use different yarn weights for this pattern?

Yes, you can substitute different yarn weights but this will affect the final size of your squares; be sure to swatch and adjust your hook size accordingly.

Do I need prior crochet experience for this pattern?

This pack is rated intermediate because it uses shaping, small appliquE9 pieces and a variety of stitches; basic knowledge of US crochet stitches is recommended.

How long does this project typically take to complete?

Most crafters will spend 12-15 hours or more making this blanket depending on the number of squares and your pace; making and sewing appliquE9s adds extra time.
