About This Bonsai Tree Amigurumi Pattern

This pattern creates a sculptural bonsai tree with a crocheted pot, textured soil, stones, trunk, branches and flat leaves. You will work mainly in spirals and use a variety of increases and decreases to shape each piece. The finished tree is a decorative amigurumi-style piece that stands on its own when assembled correctly.

Detailed round-by-round instructions and step markers are provided for every element, plus assembly tips to position branches and leaves. Photographs in the pattern illustrate placement and final composition for easy reference.

Why You'll Love This Bonsai Tree Amigurumi Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it combines sculptural crochet techniques with a playful, natural aesthetic that you can customize. I enjoy shaping the trunk and branches β€” it feels like drawing in 3D with yarn. The leaves and stones add tiny finishing touches that make every finished tree unique. I also appreciate that the pattern is modular, letting me experiment with sizes and compositions each time I make one.

Switch Things Up

I love offering ideas to personalize this bonsai pattern; try different greens and browns to create seasonal or stylized trees.

I often use a bulkier yarn and larger hook to make a chunky, statement bonsai that works well as a shelf accent.

If you want a tiny keychain version, swap to fingering yarn with a small hook and reduce the number of leaf rounds for a compact result.

I sometimes add thin wire inside selected branches for extra posability β€” the trunk should remain firm, so only add wire in branches where you need movement.

Try embroidering tiny highlights on the leaves for a textured, variegated effect β€” a few surface stitches can mimic light or leaf veins.

To change the pot look, make a round or oval base instead of the square pot, and add a contrasting rim color for visual interest.

You can experiment with the number and distribution of leaves to alter balance and silhouette β€” fewer top leaves create a taller, architectural look.

For a zen display, make multiple mini bonsais with neutral colors and arrange them together to create a miniature forest vignette.

I sometimes glue small pebbles or beads to the soil before sewing the soil in place for added weight and realism.

Swap the stones for tiny felt pieces or use embroidery to create moss patches β€” small details make each tree unique and personal.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Skipping stitch markers when changing the starting point will make rounds hard to track; place and move a marker each time you establish a new start point to keep counts accurate. βœ— Forgetting to stuff gradually causes lumps and uneven shaping; stuff small amounts as you go and shape the piece while adding fiberfill to maintain smooth curves. βœ— Overstuffing small parts like branches or supports will distort shapes and make sewing difficult; stuff these parts lightly according to the pattern notes to keep them flexible for assembly. βœ— Not securing the soil dents/tufts properly will leave the surface flat and unnatural; follow the instructions to pull long strands through the soil and knot multiple times for a textured look. βœ— Sewing leaves in the wrong orientation will unbalance the tree and cause tipping; pin and test leaf/branch positions with small pins or skewers before permanently sewing them in place.

β€” Assembly :

Info :

How to put all leaves and branches of the tree together: Divide the tree in three parts. Place the heaviest leaves (A) and their branches mostly on the bottom third of the tree, but maybe also one in the middle (depending on how many leaves you want to add yourself). Place the lightest leaves (C) and their branches on the top third of the tree. Place the medium weight leaves (B) and their branches on the middle part and bottom third of the tree. When finally sewing all branches and leaves onto the tree, make sure all leaves are pointing in the same direction.

Step :

First, sew all branches onto the tree, one by one: pin a branch in place and sew it securely with matching yarn, then remove pins. Repeat until all branches are sewn onto the trunk.

Step :

And then, sew the matching leaves (type A leaves for type A branches, etc) onto the branches. Keep the edge of the leaf close to the tree itself and flatten leaves so they sit nicely.

Step :

Place the stones onto the soil, next to the tree. Place stone A a little bit on top of stone B, place stone C next to A and B with 1-2sc in between.

Final :

Repeat until all branches and leaves are sewn onto the tree. Congratulations! Your tree is finished!

Assembly Instructions

  • Sew the tree on top of the soil, right in the middle, and secure with small stitches so the trunk sits firmly in the pot.
  • Pin each branch into position on the trunk and sew them on one by one, removing pins as you go to keep shapes natural.
  • Sew the matching leaves onto each branch (type A leaves to type A branches, etc.), keeping the leaf edge close to the branch so leaves lay flat.
  • Place stones onto the soil near the tree and sew them in place; stack stone A slightly on top of stone B and add stone C nearby with 1-2sc spacing.
  • Attach the four pot supports under each corner of the pot, keeping 8 rounds of sc distance between the top of the pot and the outside of the support.
  • Place and sew the soil into the pot before inserting the tree; use long dark brown yarn to pull tufted dents in the soil for a natural look and secure with knots.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘Use a stitch marker to mark the start of rounds and when you move the starting point; this keeps increases and decreases aligned.
  • πŸ’‘Stuff pieces gradually and lightly for branches and supports, and more firmly for the central trunk and soil to preserve shape and stability.
  • πŸ’‘Pin branches and leaves in different positions before sewing so you can test balance and avoid making the tree tip over.
  • πŸ’‘When creating the soil texture, pull long yarn strands through and knot to form dents; this adds natural texture and improves realism.

FAQs

What size will the finished piece be?

When made with the described yarn and hook size, the bonsai tree will become about 22cm/9" tall and 25cm/10" wide.

Do I need experience to make this pattern?

This pattern is rated intermediate; you should be comfortable with single crochet, increases, decreases and working in spirals, plus basic sewing for assembly.

Can I change yarn weight or hook size to alter size?

Yes, changing yarn weight and hook size will alter the final size; use a suitable hook for your chosen yarn and expect the tree to be larger or smaller.

How long does this project take to complete?

This is a multi-day project; most crafters take around 12-15 hours in total, depending on experience and how detailed you make the assembly.

Should I stuff branches and leaves?

Do not stuff the branches or leaves unless the pattern explicitly indicates to do so; the leaves and some branches are left unstuffed to keep a flat, natural look.
